Volunteer at Wreaths Across America
Please join the DC ‘Noles in our annual volunteer event for the local community this holiday season. This year we will be returning to Arlington National Cemetery to participate in Wreaths Across America, a one day ceremony where participants lay wreaths at the gravesites of fallen soldiers.
WHO: This event is open to all DC ‘Noles, family members, and friends. There is no capacity restriction for this event. Participants of all ages are welcome.
WHAT: In coordination with Wreaths Across America, we will be laying wreaths at gravesites in Arlington National Cemetery. The purpose of the event is to spread the message about the importance of remembering our fallen heroes, honoring those who serve, and teaching our children about the sacrifices made by veterans and their families to preserve our freedoms.
WHEN: Saturday, December 12 at 9:00 AM
WHERE: Due to the large crowds at the event location, we will meet at the Rosslyn Starbucks at 9:00 am (1735 N. Lynn Street, Arlington, VA – across the street from the Rosslyn metro stop, next to Chop’t). At 9:15 am we will walk as a group to the north entrance of the cemetery on North Marshall Drive. The wreath laying ceremony will begin at 9:30 am at the amphitheater in Arlington National Cemetery.
HOW: Although we do not have a capacity limit, if you plan on participating please RSVP directly to DC ‘Noles Community Service Chair, Philip Villeneuve – firstname.lastname@example.org.
Due to the large number of participants, we cannot guarantee a specific volunteer location within the cemetery. Volunteers are welcome to participate with the group or break off and participate individually if they would like to lay wreaths in a specific section of the cemetery. We will reconvene at the JFK Gravesite for the closing ceremony at 12:00 pm. Volunteers are welcome to participate in as much or as little of the event as they are able.
Warm, layered clothing and comfortable shoes are highly recommended. Participation in the event may involve a substantial amount of walking, kneeling, and bending.
Parking at and around the event location is limited and finding a spot may be difficult. Consider taking the WMATA Orange/Silver/Blue line to Rosslyn where we will meet before walking to the cemetery.
Wreaths Across America will provide the wreaths for placement. When you place a wreath at a gravesite, please remember you may be the first person to visit this grave in a substantial amount of time. Please take time to read the stone and honor that persons memory.
